Server Upgrade, February 6, 2016

We will be doing server maintenance this weekend that may involve some brief downtime. Your web site(s) and email hosted by Krohnert.net may experience a brief outage Saturday morning. We will be making some much needed updates to the web server software in order to correct some security vulnerabilities. Specifically, we will be upgrading to PHP 5.6 and MySQL 5.5.

After the upgrade, I will send out a follow up email letting you know the upgrade is complete. I will also be testing the web sites running on the server, and I would encourage you to test your own site(s) as well. It’s likely that you won’t even notice the upgrade and your web site will perform as it always has. However, there is a possibility that some sites running older or custom-built software may break. We don’t anticipate any issues for our customers, but it is still a good idea to test everything after the upgrade. If you do have an issue, let me know and I can help you determine the steps needed to correct it.

2/6/16 @ 9:20 a.m. – This update is now complete. Please test your site and contact Krohnert.net Consulting if you notice any issues. We will be contacting the owners of any sites with issues that we found in our testing.

Backing Up Your Personal Computer

If you have a computer, and don’t currently have a backup strategy in place, you are taking a big risk. As people in the industry know, it’s not IF your hard drive will fail, but WHEN. And it can happen suddenly. Everything can be working fine, and then one day your computer just may not boot up ever again. Sometimes hard drives can be recovered, but often times, the only recovery option possible will be cost-prohibitive. As a result, it’s critical that you have a copy of the contents of your hard drive, or you will lose everything on your computer – your pictures, documents, emails, financial records, etc.
